BALLPOINT PEN – A SHORT HISTORY OF PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL
A ballpoint pen is a type of writing instrument used for writing and drawing. It is used all over the world and represents a part of everyday life.
It consists of a reservoir, ink refill (which can come in different colors), and a mechanism with a small ball that applies ink onto paper. When the ball comes into contact with the paper during movement, it rotates and transfers ink from the reservoir onto the paper surface.

In 1888, American John J. Loud patented the first device intended for marking leather for aesthetic and industrial purposes. Croatian scientist Slavoljub Penkala patented, among other inventions, a precursor to the ballpoint pen in 1906. Hungarian inventor László József Bíró, together with his brother György, developed the first true ballpoint pen in Budapest after eighteen years of development, forming the basis of today’s ballpoint pen with a small rotating ball that transfers ink onto paper.
Ballpoint pens are one of the most classic promotional products and a timeless choice in marketing campaigns and corporate gifts. Blue ink pens, black ink pens, red ink pens, plastic pens, metal pens, colorful pens—these are only part of what we offer. From simple everyday pens to exclusive models that represent a premium gift. Ballpoint pens are most often branded using pad printing, LED printing, and UV printing.

Bíró patented the invention in 1938 in Hungary, and on December 27, 1938 in the USA under the name “Fountain Pen for Pulp Ink” (later “Ball Pen”).
The real market breakthrough was enabled by British businessman Henry George Martin. He discovered that ballpoint pens were ideal for aircraft crews because they did not leak. He bought Bíró’s patent and together with Frederick Miles founded the first ballpoint pen factory in the world in Reading (Berkshire, England) in 1944, starting mass production. In the first year, the factory delivered 30,000 pens to the RAF.
The ballpoint pen will always remain what people use to write down their thoughts. Even though digital development has advanced greatly, the ballpoint pen still holds its place as a primary writing tool and remains a tradition.
